A Queen’s life is one of servitude.

Aren has a secret, one she has kept hidden from her family, one which is the reason she begged and pleaded to be finished at court like so many other young ladies. Her parents agree to send her, so long as when she returns she accepts her father’s choice of a man.

She agrees, but she’s never going back.

Residing in court is dangerous. Ranks—those of exceptional ability and use—gather at the court to put their talents to use for the betterment of all people, and are constantly on the lookout for those who might harbour secrets. If Aren is discovered, it would surely mean the end of her, but if she can make it through, find the perfect time to escape, she would finally be free.

Av is one such rank, a warrior with decades of experience, who is fed up with the reign of his brother’s mate. The woman holds control over a powerful and ancient magic, making her the ruler of the land.

All Aren had to do was stay out of Av’s way, to go unnoticed by the man.

And all Av has ever wanted was a woman determined to make her way in the world despite all odds.

This book was horribly confusing. For the longest I had no idea what was going on as the characters bandied out words such as “Queens”, “Ranks”, “Warriors”, the “Throne” etc. and they were not at all used in the more traditional way. They had another meaning entirely that had me scrunching up my face in confusion because they were NOT EVER explained. At least in the beginning. Later on, you will really get to love Ervam because he is a wonderful man who takes pity on us poor sods who simply can’t understand what’s going on. So I just thought that I would do everyone a favor and explain the basic settings. There might be spoilers but I thought people would really appreciate not being left to drown.
So the world seems to be some sort of dystopia but I’m not too sure because nothing is ever really explained. They have certain modern technologies like lights that turn on with a snap of the fingers (was it a snap or a clap?) and running water. They also have an odd sort of government that gives me a headache. Anyway, the “Ranks” appear to be people who are born with certain abilities or skills. These ranks include Healer, Warrior, Queen, etc. and they are highly valued, although there seems to be some sort of mixed feelings going around. They are different from people who are called “Commoners” because of these abilities. One thing to keep in mind is that this system is entirely separate from the lords and ladies that own land and titles. Another thing is that magic exists. “Queens” are people who can often control this magic or have it, although this is not always the case. They don’t really explain what trait truly makes a “Queen” but it seems to me that these women (they only seem to be women) are the only ones able to sit on the “Throne”. The “Throne” is something (again, not really explained exactly what it is) that chooses a Queen to power itself. They say that it is used to power their technology but another reason is later given. The “Queens” are pretty much used as a battery and as time passes, the battery dies out. The battery being the “Queens”, mind you. That’s pretty much the things that I found really confusing.
Now on to my actual review. I hated the inconsistency of the story. None of the characters were really consistent (except for Em, and that’s saying something) and I had to keep going “what?” when I thought a character was acting, well, out of character. I didn’t really like the relationship between Aren and Av because it seemed a little abusive to me. I didn’t particularly like Av at times because I felt that his seven year old brother was more knowledgeable and self-aware than he was. It seems the author were using him as a sort of way to let the reader know more about the world by having him ask questions he should know the answers to. Throughout the story, I kept getting hints of a society that kind of made me want to cringe, what with “kind” characters taking actual pleasure from torturing people, women being forced (especially in the case of Aren. Av literally tells her that he’s going to do whatever he wants to her because she’s “his”) and beaten or injured (seriously, in context it was uncomfortable, I don’t know how it could be seen as okay) and other situations but really seemed to be aimed at gender (for guys too, a little). I also felt the ending was a little too much a cliffhanger.
There were some good parts. What I understood of the story was pretty interesting and I’m curious as to what will happen next. Despite the story ending on a cliffhanger, I wasn’t really upset. I just thought, “It’s great that I didn’t pay anything for this book because now I’ll feel less guilty for buying the next one”. I’m interested in continuing the series but not if the relationship between Aren and Av continues as it has.

Trouble Seat of Magic Book 1 eBook RJ Price Reviews

RJ Price's debut fantasy novel Trouble, the first of her Seat of Magic series, is an engrossing story, one that compels a reader's sustained attention. Trouble demands active reading, which means piecing together clues, anticipating questions, and speculating. Although information is revealed and presented in standard exposition and in dialogue, none of it feels forced or rote, which is itself a talent within the genre. Trouble is well paced, realistically crafted, and vivid. And rather than being merely escapist fiction, it pushes against ingrained tropes and assumptions so prevalent in the genre without being preachy.

For a freebie this was a real coup. I find fantasy very hit and miss - I either like it or I don't, and I hate 'epic journey' tales. I read this pretty much in one sitting, ending up turning the light out at 144am...so this was all good for me.

Although the book did use the background of the usual medieval type atmosphere, it did have some very strong women in roles of power, so this included several types of issues which keeps you going and doesn't feel like a damsel in distress novel.

There are a lot of really strong characters that are clearly defined and have distinctive personalities and quirks which keeps the novel feeling fresh, with new characters introduced at various stages. The story is clear with power struggles and political intrigue that maintains that surge to keep on reading.

I've got the next book and am soldiering on.
It's amazing how quickly I found myself engrossed in this strange, yet familiar world Ms Price has created. Her characters are marvelously real, full of quirks and foibles, and prone to making the sort of mistakes I've found myself committing. It's refreshing to meet real people in books.

Aren is both clever and naive, looking only to find herself a refuge, a cottage by a lake. The last thing in the world she wants is to be noticed, and if she didn't have to be at court in order to give her younger sister the opportunity to attend court as well, Aren would have happily avoided the minefield that is Em's court.

Em is a mad queen, full of rage and fear in equal measures, and sees plots in every corner, Her caprice is tempered by her mate Jer, and his brother Av, but even these two can only do so much to control Em. Even Em's daughter is at risk from the wrath of the queen. Em is failing, and both men know it. While they dread Em's instability, there's no guarantee that the next queen to sit the throne will be any better.

Av barely notices Aren at first, to Aren's satisfaction. But when he does, it sets in motion a chain of events no one could have predicted. I'm not going to leave spoilers, but the twists and turns are superb, and kept me reading often later than I'd planned. I started out disliking Av, but he managed to redeem himself by the end of the book. Av's full of contradictions, and it just makes him that much more a flesh and blood person rather than a stock character.

This is the first book in a series, and I'm entirely delighted, because I really, really want more of Av and Aren, of Jer, and of Telm, not to mention Mar and Ervam. Oh, hells, I just want Ms Price to write more!
